Many of us may have heard of Colombia following the release of the famous “Narcos” TV Series and some people still think it’s a violent and dangerous country because of its dark past , but with this article we will show you that Colombia is not anymore the country of Pablo Escobar but it has become one of the best tourist-friendly destinations in the Americas and in the World!
Our first contact with Colombia was Medellín, the city of eternal Spring that has transformed into a first prize winner for “Most Innovative City in the World”, one of the most citizen-oriented developed locations you will ever find.
The streets of Medellín are covered in urban art since the Government commissioned Colombian street artists and Latin-American to cover the public spaces of the neighborhoods and around the escalators with murals that tell the story of Medellín and the Colombian people. Take a walk around Medellín and admire this urban gallery. Most of the paintings can be seen around the metro stations but also in other parts of the city, including the famous Comuna 13. This is the living proof that you can turn a dark past into a bright future using art and education. We had a great City Art Tour with Epic Tours Medellín; if you want to contact them you can do it by e-mail email@example.com or Facebook.
As you stroll around the city you’ll see friendly faces of people who will offer you directions and travel advices even if they don’t speak your language. Colombians are ready to receive tourists and they will make you feel like home.
When it comes to food Colombia has a delicious cuisine to offer along with the incredible variety of exotic fruits. From “Bandeja Paisa” to “Sancocha de Pescado“, Chicharrón Colombiano and many types of Arepas, you will only find another reason to fall in love with this country.
On of the main reasons known by travelers when it comes to visiting Colombia is Coffee. We recommend taking a tour of one of the many Coffee Farms located around Colombia. During such a tour you get to see the entire process that a coffee bean goes through from planting to manual harvesting, cleaning and actually preparing the final coffee drink. While on the tour there are great views to be admired in this amazing Colombian department of Antioquia. One of the best half or full day coffee tours you can take in Medellín is with The Andes Adventure – firstname.lastname@example.org, Website.
Another amazing destination in Colombia is Cartagena; great Caribbean beach attraction. This city shows a great combination of modern Skyscrapers in the Bocagrande neighbourhood and the pittoresque old town with colorful old buildings inside the citadel walls. You can either stay in the old city and enjoy the local cuisine as well as the street vibe or choose a secluded all-inclusive resort outside the city – Cartagena has it all!
Unfortunately we only spent a week in Colombia but we will definitely come back to visit other incredible sites that this country has to offer. Amongst our list of future Colombian destinations we can mention:
- Tayrona National Park
- Leticia, Amazonas District
- Cano Cristales, The Rainbow River
- San Andres Island
- Bogota – Nation’s Capital
